The Telegraph in a tarlan dan :

Hailakandi: Villagers living along the Assam-Mizoram border have started shifting to other places following the clashes over the construction of a rest shed by the Mizo Zirlai Pawl, an influential students' union of Mizoram, at Zophai, which it claims as its own.

Sources said around 200 people have left the border area and taken shelter in the nearby villages in southern Hailakandi.

The Hailakandi district committee of the All Assam Minority Students' Union (AAMSU) has threatened to start an economic blockade if the border row continues. President of the committee, Fakrul Islam Laskar, said they will not allow even a single inch of Assam land to be given to Mizoram. He said they have already informed the union's decision to Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal.

Laskar said they will stop the supply of all goods from Assam to Mizoram if the border row is not resolved. He said they were always in favour of an amicable settlement and requested Sonowal to ensure the safety and security of the people living along the border.

The train link to Mizoram's Bairabi (Kolasib district) passes through Hailakandi district.

The AAMSU members alleged the business of non-Mizos had been disrupted owing to the border tension.

The Hailakandi unit of the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti (KMSS) demanded setting up of a police checkgate on the border along NH154, which connects Assam with Mizoram.

They said they had written to Sonowal to ensure people living along the border do not feel insecure. Secretary of the KMSS unit, Jahir Uddin Laskar, said the matter was also raised by Katlicherra MLA Sujam Uddin Laskar in the Assembly.

The Congress on Wednesday alleged the border issue was being politicised ahead of the Assembly election in Mizoram. PCC secretary D.H. Barbhuiya said the border tension was an old issue and it began in 1996 when they started to construct a shed for Mizoram police but the other parties were then silent on the issue. He urged other parties not to politicise the issue as the matter concerned a state's territory.

Hailakandi deputy commissioner Adil Khan said they were looking into the alleged assault on a woman journalist from Mizoram at the site.
